Working, Trying and Tired Mom!

Lying on the bed, staring at the empty ceiling while the fan spun at its highest speed, thoughts came one after another. Beside me was someone sleeping so soundly and peacefully, and on that calm face, I saw eternity. On that calm face, I saw innocence and trust. I grew up making grand plans and ended up doing a mediocre job, trusting that time would eventually put everything in its place. Somewhere between mistakes and blessings, I hold you tightly in my arms, wondering what I can do next to make you proud one day. My heart skips a beat when you smile, and it melts when you cutely call me "Ama." As I lie there, I feel overwhelmed with joy to have you in my life. Living this ordinary life while carrying hopes and dreams of giving you an extraordinary one, life does not always feel smooth. The uncertainty of life is what scares me the most. What if life takes me away before you get to see the real world? Your existence has become one of my greatest reasons to keep going, and I...

Leadership, Legacy, and Lessons: The Words of Bhutan’s Kings.

11.11 I am truly blessed to be born in Bhutan, the Land of the Thunder Dragon. Our country is not only rich in values and culture but also takes great pride in its natural heritage, with 69.71% of its land under forest cover—well above the constitutional requirement to maintain at least 60%. Bhutan is a peaceful nation, often referred to as the last Shangri-La, and above all, it is fortunate to be guided by benevolent and visionary leaders who embody the highest ideals. Our monarchs lead by example and inspire, motivate, encourage, and empower every Bhutanese. We, the people of Bhutan, are privileged to have selfless monarchs who have gone to the battlefield to protect their citizens and who have sacrificed personal comforts to serve the nation. Since the establishment of the monarchy in 1907, our kings have served with unparalleled dedication, compassion, empathy, love, care, and determination. This year, our Fourth Druk Gyalpo turns Seventy. When His Majesty described the Fourt...

The mountain within

Ever looked at someone and thought, "You were supposed to be more than this?"  There are moments when others appear to fall short of the potential once seen in them — as if something better was expected. Conscience often comes into question:  Is the right thing being done? Are the right words being spoken? Are others being treated fairly?  Life becomes a series of such questions — all part of navigating a personal path. No one can fully understand another person, just as full understanding of others remains elusive.  Often, the biggest obstacle is not the world, but the self. An embarrassing moment from the past continues to linger — a memory that returns unexpectedly, even on the best of days, as vividly as if it happened just yesterday. Life tends to revolve around thoughts like:  "That should have been done."  "That should have been said."  "That shouldn’t have been said."  "That shouldn’t have been done." There’s a recurring feelin...

Slowing down to see what really matters

The news of people losing their lives to natural calamities, accidents, dreaded diseases, murder, and mental health issues is frequent. With just your phone, you can see so many things happening around the globe — people losing their loved ones, their homes, their lives — and here we are, feeling helpless and saddened by such news. However, despite this real-life evidence, we go to bed without even thinking that this could be our last day. We argue with others as if we have forever to live. We hate others as if only our life matters. We live as though death isn’t coming for us anytime soon. I worry that something might happen to me, my family, or the people I love. I worry that I might pass away at any moment. I worry a lot about my son too. But most of the time, I rarely reflect on the impermanence — the inevitable impermanence. I want so many things. I want comfort in my life. I want to bring wealth and peace to my family. I want to do well in whatever I pursue. And yet, the tho...

Is Your Life Worth Living?

Looking back, I think I was a really straightforward person. I used to be honest and sincere but also selfish and so full of myself. I was always wandering in utopia since I was a child. During class, I expected everyone to be present and complete every task sincerely. When the teacher gave us homework saying they would check it the next day, I hoped it would actually be checked as promised. When we were given other tasks, I hope the ones who are not present will be punished. I wanted to tell the names of those who cheated without the teacher’s knowledge.  During most of my leisure time, I envied the people in groups because I wandered alone. Each and every one I knew had a close friend but I always got a feeling that nobody can get along with me. I didn’t know why, but most of the time I saw myself talking nonstop in the group and always trying to get the attention of others. I made friends and I lost them, I regretted it and found myself alone again. Was I the victim or th...
